Born in NYC to El Salvadoran parents and raised in Austria, I was exposed to several cultures and aesthetics from a very early age. I have fond memories of spending afternoons with my mother on the veranda of our old house in Ober St.Veit surrounded by nature on the outskirts of Vienna. She would sit at her sewing machine working on a project for the home and I would sit next to her doing small tasks or “oficios”, learning to sew, mend, embroider, darn and crochet. The handiwork my mother taught me she herself had painstakingly learned as a student in a catholic boarding school in San Salvador. I distinctly remember her crafting my favorite pleated dress from my father’s repurposed gray wool pants and embellishing each pleat with a little baby chick ‘pollito’ carrying an umbrella. I wore my pollito dress with great pride and joy, having watched my mother assemble it with care every step of the way.

At the Age of 19 I left my home and the beautiful city of Vienna to attend the Rhode Island School of Design. It was truly a life changing experience to be surrounded by talented, hard working students and supportive teachers eager to guide us to greater heights. After the obligatory freshman foundation I did a year and a half of Architecture, only to make a sudden switch into the Textile department after taking a six week weaving class between semesters. I was hooked, the beautiful movement of the loom, the warmth of the fibers and the explosion of colorful yarns were too much to resist. I realized how starved I had been for the tactile component of creativity and found myself  at home in the world of yarns, knitting, weaving and fabric printing.

Today the same industrious and creative spirit I learned as a child and at RISD lives in me to produce and grow Shibori Baby. I embroider each bib, knit each little mitten and sew every blanket with love from the light filled studio at my home in Providence RI. I carefully pair vibrant fabrics with exceptional yarns to create the perfect gift for ages infant to toddler, always using 100% natural fabrics and yarn. My biggest wish is for each baby quilt that goes out into the world to become part of a family’s life and story, and to provide comfort and warmth to a little someone.
